Copyright year
Should the copyright year in the file description be updated to include 2011 (and soon 2012)?
Speaking about 2012, should we search for and reexamine "as of 2011" uses in this wiki? But I digress... Eighty5cacao 20:51, 27 December 2011 (MST)
- The year in a copyright notice designates when a particular work was "first published", which ends up meaning when the work (or its most recent substantial modification) was uploaded. --Tepples 07:58, 28 December 2011 (MST)
- So why does its mere presence on the wiki not constitute continuous publication, which is what the dash notation would imply? I really have been making an effort to read up on US copyright law, but sometimes my mind gets a little jumpy. I will find a different venue to discuss the "as of" issue. - The year before the dash means when the first version was first published, and the year after the dash means when the revision was first published. For example, the copyright dates on the title screens of the individual games in the Super Mario All-Stars multicart follow this convention: the first year says when the work first came out, and the second year says when a work with substantially revised graphics came out. But compare to the situation with the Wii Shop Channel: just because Nintendo continuously publishes a given game doesn't mean its copyright screen needs updating each year. --Tepples 12:57, 28 December 2011 (MST)

I seem to recall Super Mario All-Stars using spaces rather than dashes, at least for SMB1 and Lost Levels. But I admit I'm out of my nitpicking league, as I was on Talk:GNU/Linux... Eighty5cacao 14:11, 28 December 2011 (MST)
