Hello (I am not a spambot)
I'd like to know whether you got my messages via email (using the form at pineight.com/contact) and Uncyclopedia user talk. In these messages, I said that I am Pentium5dot1 on Uncyclopedia and that although I have a legitimate interest in some topics discussed on this wiki, my early edits will be mainly proofreading and questions. I informed you in advance of my intent to register so that I would not be mistaken for a spambot.
Is the pineight.com/contact form still an acceptable method by which to contact you, or should I (and others) do so on-wiki? Eighty5cacao 22:54, 17 August 2010 (MST)
- Welcome to the wiki. --Tepples 05:38, 18 August 2010 (MST)
- Thank you. Am I correct in assuming that you no longer frequently check the email address that receives mail from the pineight.com/contact form? I realize that you are busy with a real job. Eighty5cacao 09:59, 19 August 2010 (MST)
- I check it, but not daily. --Tepples 06:00, 23 August 2010 (MST)
One more whitelist request
Sorry for not asking you about MediaWiki:Captcha-addurl-whitelist more directly - I also made this apology in this edit to my user page ... which still triggered a CAPTCHA because mediawiki.org was not on the whitelist. Is it reasonable to add mediawiki.org to the whitelist? Or should we add an interwiki prefix mw: instead?
The same question applies to Uncyclopedia - I would like to add such a link at Talk:Eloi language#Other clues. (Neither a [[mw:Extension:ConfirmEdit|mw:]] nor an uncyclopedia: prefix currently exists.) Eighty5cacao 23:18, 22 August 2010 (MST)
- I added uncyclopedia: but found it was too long to type and added uncyc: too. mw: was too short to be unambiguous (Google thinks it means Merriam-Webster's Dictionary), but mediawiki: is a namespace. mediawikiwiki exists (mediawikiwiki:MediaWiki) but again is long. --Tepples 05:56, 23 August 2010 (MST)
- If this link to Playskool goes through, reCAPTCHA is not entirely broken. --Chester@Tilwick 09:22, 23 August 2010 (MST)
Deletion request
Please delete User:Eighty5cacao/misc/HTTPS and RC4. I have already archived all relevant content from that page on my own computer, and I have decided that the topic is best dealt with on another site. Sorry for wasting your time and server space. Eighty5cacao 20:15, 23 August 2010 (MST)
I am aware of this (your edit summary), but I'm not sure whether a redirect is the best idea because
1) it's a cross-namespace redirect, 2) no non-editor is likely to search for the redirect, and 3) I would prefer not to have such a redirect polluting Special:WhatLinksHere/LJ65.
Do any of these sound like valid reasons not to have a redirect? Eighty5cacao 11:16, 26 August 2010 (MST)
- As I understand it, on Wikipedia, redirects from userspace to mainspace after an article is moved or merged stay, at least for a while, as a record of the move or merge. Cross-namespace redirects there are frowned upon mostly from mainspace to other spaces, especially project space. As for polluting WhatLinksHere, that's one reason why WLH has a "hide redirects" button. --Tepples 13:38, 26 August 2010 (MST)
- Is this an acceptable compromise, or is there some reason it should really be a hard redirect? Eighty5cacao 14:00, 26 August 2010 (MST)
- That looks fine for now, but I might go improve the wording. --Tepples 14:09, 26 August 2010 (MST)
pineight.com/dwi page
Some questions/comments about the East Germany simfiles page:
- In the sentence "These are simfiles designed for StepMania and Dance With Intensity...": ddruk.com will be closing soon [1]. This is a problem because it contains the only mirror of the Dance With Intensity site. (http://dwi.claws-and-paws.com/ exists, but it only links to ddruk and a site with dead DNS. I still need to check the Wayback Machine.)
- In the Remixes section: You may wish to mention something about browser support for Ogg Vorbis files, e.g. Firefox 3.5 and later. Also, I'm pretty sure the link to the AM-260 (In Tune Mix) step file is dead. By the way, why is the audio file for The legend. (period) not hosted on pinocchio.jk0.org?
Eighty5cacao 17:16, 31 August 2010 (MST)
RIP end6.org
DNS is no longer resolving for end6.org. (I have tested this from two different ISPs, and a query for "end6.org" in several major search engines no longer produces results for the site itself.)
This can slow down loading of the pineight.com home page in some circumstances.
Could you remove the script from your home page? Eighty5cacao 16:30, 18 September 2010 (MST)
- Fixed, along with some other minor changes to the navbar. --Tepples 18:50, 19 September 2010 (MST)
TVTropes and the Eloi kawaii issue
I noticed that you seem to have edited tvtropes:ptitleztvf5oz5 along the lines of what I said at User:Eighty5cacao/TODO.
I think it would have been better to edit tvtropes:TheTimeMachine first in order to explain the neoteny/kawaii connection and the evidence in the book.
What explanation might we be able to put at at tvtropes:TheTimeMachine? Eighty5cacao 13:01, 21 September 2010 (MST) (last edit 13:10, 21 September 2010 (MST))
- From the lead of tvtropes:TheTimeMachine: "the Eloi, peaceful child-like humanoids living an idyllic life". I thought that was close enough. What is missing? --Tepples 13:51, 21 September 2010 (MST)
- The main problem is that "child-like" does not adequately convey the extremes of neotenous appearance and behavior shown by the Eloi in general and Weena in particular. It may be helpful to define it in terms of a named trope.
- Actually, the "I'm Taking Her Home With Me!" page is the one in greater need of clarification, since readers who see that page without first reading tvtropes:TheTimeMachine might not understand why the Eloi are cute/neotenous/kawaii. Such readers are probably more familiar with the Eloi from the films than from the book. Eighty5cacao 14:01, 21 September 2010 (MST) (last edit 17:00, 21 September 2010 (MST))
- The lead of ITHHWM mentions tvtropes:Kawaisa, and I've added a bit of explanatory text to flesh out the specific aspect (arrested development at age 6) with which the Traveller appears to have "fallen in like". --Tepples 18:31, 21 September 2010 (MST)
- ←
Okay, that looks good. I'll try not to make so many revisions to talk-page comments in the future. Eighty5cacao 18:58, 21 September 2010 (MST)
- Oh, I forgot: From what I can see of TVTropes conventions, tvtropes:TheTimeMachine should link back to ITHHWM with an appropriate quote and/or explanation. Eighty5cacao 09:40, 22 September 2010 (MST)
- At this point, you appear familiar enough with the site that you can go ahead and get known there ;-) --Tepples 09:47, 22 September 2010 (MST)
- Thanks, but no thanks - with all the schoolwork coming up, I don't think it's the best use of my time to be editing TVTropes. Anyway, I still need to register on Wikipedia... Eighty5cacao 10:16, 22 September 2010 (MST)
Overplayed
In order to facilitate the future creation of StepMania simfiles, could you put together a version of your "Overplayed" mashup without the "work in progress" voice sample at the beginning?
(I'm not asking for any other changes.) Eighty5cacao 11:47, 24 September 2010 (MST)
- I don't remember where I stashed the original files for that mix. So I just used Vcut to cut off the first 88200 samples (2 seconds). But I did manage to make a background, a banner, and a set of beginner steps with correct BPM to which steppers can add their steps. Should I just post what I have, or should I make light, standard, and heavy? (P.S. "Just go to hell and DIE with DW--" in "The legend of ART" sounds dated now that DWI hasn't had an update in seven years. Today's listeners, who haven't used anything other than S&M, are more likely to think of arthur:D.W. Read. --Tepples 20:40, 26 September 2010 (MST)
- Go ahead and post what you have. I really didn't mean to inconvenience you too much. Although I have Rarewares bookmarked, I never managed to find vcut - I was confused by reading a while ago that such a tool would be harder to design correctly than its MP3 counterpart. Eighty5cacao 22:51, 26 September 2010 (MST)
- comment rewritten: To clarify, I meant that you should go ahead and post the simfile with just beginner steps. I guess I could try writing light
and standard myself, but any work I do on the simfile won't be released publicly for a while. Eighty5cacao 10:32, 28 September 2010 (MST) (last edit 20:47, 29 September 2010 (MST))
- hopefully... --Tepples 18:07, 1 October 2010 (MST)
- ←
Okay, thank you. (I struck "and standard" from my previous comment, as I didn't realize at the time that this was intended as a full-intensity boss song, and I'm still quite a pad noob myself.)
I didn't realize this song was that old... which raises another question: When did you make 10.2.2. (a.k.a. doubles_90.ogg)? What about your other chiptune remixes (Butterfly, Maxx Unlimited, and PARANOiA)? Eighty5cacao 19:15, 1 October 2010 (MST)
- TV Tropes might call it a degraded boss rush. As for dating my chiptunes: I made 10.2.2. in early 2004 when I still had two working pads; it was supposed to be a gallop etude. The covers of Butterfly (2004) and PARANOiA (2005) were made to prove a point on some forum (it was either DDREI or Bemanistyle) that DDR GB's 8-bit conversions were worse than they had to be given the hardware capability. Likewise, Maxx Unlimited was a response to a very un-NES-sounding Maxx Nintendo on Bemanistyle's simfile section sometime in 2005. --Tepples 07:42, 2 October 2010 (MST)
- Again, thank you for the info. By "full-intensity" I was referring mainly to BPM doubling, as I have little experience playing charts which are BPM-doubled to >250 BPM or so. I remember you mentioning a few times on the NESdev forums the DDR GB issue. Still, I wrongly guessed that half your chiptunes were made within the last 2-3 years, just because I wasn't aware of a public release until then. Had I known that you had not archived the files for this mix, I would have looked harder myself for Vcut in the first place. Eighty5cacao 10:18, 2 October 2010 (MST)
- It's a medley of mash-ups of boss songs, much like the medleys in DDR Solo, so of course it'd be the same speed ;-) Try playing ordinary (120-160 BPM) light charts on x1.5, then on x2, until you feel ready to read at the faster speed. Or you could learn to play heavy with index fingers on arrow keys so that you can read that fast even if you can't move that fast. --Tepples 10:07, 4 October 2010 (MST)
- ←
It's a problem of original chart speed, not reading speed. I use 2.5x as my preferred speed mod, and I am comfortable with that over approx. 100-200 BPM chart speed.
We don't need to go into the details too much, as I wasn't intending to ask for DDR advice.
Your "Butterfly" remix has both S3M and NSF versions. Did you make both at around the same time? Did you use S3M2NSF, or is all your NES music NerdTracker II-based? Eighty5cacao 11:08, 4 October 2010 (MST)
- The Butterfly NSF was made in NT2. You can hear subtle differences in the hi-hat, and a false start in the melody near the end. --Tepples 11:59, 4 October 2010 (MST)
pinocchio.jk0.org is down
This may affect all of jk0.org, but I don't know of any other subdomains I could check. The domain now seems to be parked. I'm sorry I can't help you with any financial issues you may be having.
I first noticed a few minutes ago when your NESdev forum avatar was no longer showing. Also, the links on pineight.com/dwi are broken.
If you were trying to upload some files from the above topic, you may need to find an alternate host. Eighty5cacao 17:38, 1 October 2010 (MST)
- Is it fixed now? --Tepples 17:55, 1 October 2010 (MST)
- Yes. Also, sorry for being pushy about the above topic; I realize you have a real job with which you are busy, but I would appreciate some update on the status. Eighty5cacao 18:06, 1 October 2010 (MST)

There appear to be further connectivity problems now. I will post again in about 24 hours if they are not resolved. Eighty5cacao 17:19, 25 December 2010 (MST)
- My first guess is that the router got bumped during a Christmas party, or someone disconnected its network cable while trying to disconnect his Xbox 360. I may not have physical access for another 24 hours. --Tepples 18:40, 25 December 2010 (MST)
- Thanks for the information. I was experiencing some sporadic slowness with my Internet connection (and I saw a Fail Whale for the first time) so I wasn't sure who was responsible for the problem. (I originally guessed that fallout from Anonymous running Wikileaks-related DDOS attacks might have affected a hosting facility or nameserver.)
- BTW, another member of your family has expressed doubts about a Songs that sound alike entry (see corresponding talk page). Eighty5cacao 21:08, 25 December 2010 (MST) (last edit 21:27, 25 December 2010 (MST))
- I know. I keyed it in myself from his dictation, mostly as a note to self to get a mash-up made. Anyway, it should be back up, and I am considering moving all this stuff from hosting on a cable line at home to the Go Daddy server that handles pineight.com. --Tepples 18:26, 26 December 2010 (MST)
- Ok, verified as working now. Sorry for not realizing you were already aware of that comment; perhaps I should have done a whois on the IP address? Eighty5cacao 22:04, 26 December 2010 (MST)
Fictional continuity
To what extent are the plots of your works intended to form a single, coherent fictional universe?
In particular, are Concentration Room and DX Town intended to take place on the same planet? (I am not asking about any specific degree of spatial or temporal proximity, just whether it is the same planet.) Or is Concentration Room meant to take place on Earth (which would make the answer to the previous question "no")? Eighty5cacao 08:49, 4 October 2010 (MST)
- In 0.01, not 100 percent. But eventually, yes. At first, Tolkien's The Hobbit was in a separate universe from The Silmarillion, but there were seeds of connections between the two. After LotR began to lay down the canon for the end times of Middle-earth, Tolkien updated The Hobbit to version 1.1 with a revised encounter between Bilbo and Gollum, retconning the original story as a simplification on Bilbo's part. Compare what DC and Marvel did with their respective comics universes: release prototypes as separate titles with not-entirely-consistent links among their universes that needed frequent and sometimes delicate retcons, then revise and reboot them into one universe. And yes, as with Westron→English in LotR, the representation of the language of the main characters is a translation convention.
- This also implies, based on a planned connection between DX Town game rules and RTCs of real-world devices, that each of God's worlds (see Creation myth) has the same period for the rotation of the planet relative to the planet-sun line (86400 s), the revolution of the moon relative to the same line (29.5306 days), and the revolution of the planet (365.2422 days), so that the Metonic cycles line up. It's not like Harvest Moon: Magical Melody, which has a much shorter day and a 120-day year with four months. (That and a goal of finding K.K. songs to fill the Harvest Goddess's iPod, and a bisexual Jamie.) --Tepples 09:52, 4 October 2010 (MST)
- Hmmm... so what about LJ65? Does it have some backstory that hasn't been released publicly yet? Eighty5cacao 01:00, 10 October 2010 (MST)
- Are you kidding? Did you want me to make an opening cut scene like the one in Tetris Worlds, where the characters have to flee their dying planet through stargates that are unlocked with Tetris? The closest would possibly be "Getting Lockjaw". --Tepples 05:56, 10 October 2010 (MST)
- First of all: Sorry, because this question might have been considered a necropost. Okay, I was "kidding" to some extent - but mainly because I was coming up with some crazy ideas about how a tetromino game could fit into the Concentration Room storyline. It would probably involve a second (apparent) accident at Hombon Pharma. (Further exploration of such ideas would belong in my userspace, not here.)
- I acknowledge that LJ65 is in code freeze for a very good reason, not to mention NROM for a very good reason. So any backstory would have to be explained in external materials, which as you stated already exist. Eighty5cacao 11:28, 10 October 2010 (MST) (last edit 20:50, 10 October 2010 (MST))
Blocking of spammers
Is there some reason your block of Anjila428 was not set to indefinite? Eighty5cacao 18:01, 13 October 2010 (MST)
- Because I lack practice with minimizing collateral damage from autoblock hitting widely shared IPs. This is the first wiki that both A. I've had admin rights on and B. has come under vandal attack. --Tepples 18:17, 13 October 2010 (MST)
- In that case, would a slightly longer duration (1 month perhaps) have been suitable? I assume that you will reblock for a longer duration if the account resumes spamming after the current block expires? Maybe we should create
{{unblock}}
? Eighty5cacao 18:26, 13 October 2010 (MST)
Protecting Talk:Main Page
Should we protect Talk:Main Page with a note telling users to come here (User talk:Tepples) for legitimate discussions?
Or maybe semi-protect instead (in which case there is no need for such a note)? Eighty5cacao 08:19, 18 October 2010 (MST)
- The spammers will edit here too. Because mainspace is already effectively semied (only
autoconfirmed
, emailconfirmed
, and sysop
groups have editmain
), I try to protect talk pages sparingly. Another major MediaWiki installation has similar policy: "A page and its talk page should not both be protected at the same time." --Tepples 10:18, 18 October 2010 (MST)
Onderheynah-lo.ogg
The link to this file on the simfile page appears to be broken (HTTP 404). Other links seem to be operational. Did you intentionally delete this file, or is it a technical glitch? If the latter, is it fixable?
(I have no real need for the file right now; just asking.) Eighty5cacao 20:41, 1 November 2010 (MST)
- It was probably intentional. After I put it up, I realized that low bitrate Vorbis smears the sharp attacks, or at least the version I tried did. There isn't as much need for low-bandwidth versions in 2010 now that satellite home Internet is available to most locations that can't get cable or DSL. --Tepples 05:16, 2 November 2010 (MST)
- I had always assumed that you had provided a lower-bitrate version partly as an artistic decision, so that the encoding artifacts would accentuate features desired in the genre. I never actually tried to listen to the file until it was too late, however. Eighty5cacao 08:30, 2 November 2010 (MST)
Project DX
To what extent is DX Town related to the "Project DX" mentioned on the page for Restore Animal Crossing (RAC)? Eighty5cacao 21:31, 15 November 2010 (MST)
- At first, entirely. DX Town was supposed to be for Nintendo DS, and RAC was to become a tool to let the player import a character from AC2, just as AC3 for Wii would eventually allow. The setup was to be that the player character leaves one AC town for another but gets into a wreck near another town, and instead of funny animals, this town has strange humanoid species that are the result of cloning experiments, hence the "Double" in "Double Crossing". (This was before I came up with the current canon speciation event.) I conceived this during the four months that I played AC2, from March to June of 2007. But then I got a job, and that interfered with my creativity. --Tepples 06:16, 16 November 2010 (MST)

Nesdev move request
Namco 106 audio → Namco 163 audio
I am not registered on the Nesdev wiki, which is why I am making this request here. (I have been registered on the forums at various times as 85cocoa and another account whose exact name I don't remember. That was long before the present state of the wiki policies, and I probably wouldn't be approved for an account given my lack of NESdev activities.)
Justification for the request: I remember hearing that Namco's mapper ASIC designated "106" lacks the extra sound channel, and it is the ASIC designated "163" (and also one other model) that has it. More verifiably, the NSF player interfaces of current Nestopia and VirtuaNES refer to the sound channel as Namco 163 or the abbreviation N163.
If you do not wish to make the move, I suggest at least creating a redirect. Eighty5cacao 17:56, 14 December 2010 (MST)
- I've posted it on the BBS and wiki, and if there's no objection after a few days, I'll make the move. It appears there are also moves to be made related to Sunsoft FME-7. --Tepples 18:26, 15 December 2010 (MST)
- Okay, got it, thanks. Sorry for not having reliable sources handy. Eighty5cacao 18:37, 15 December 2010 (MST)
