A couple random ones

The Rolling Stones, "Anybody Seen My Baby" vs. "Constant Craving" by k. d. lang (mentioned on the song's wikipedia page)

"Africa" by Toto vs. "Fireflies" by Owl City

Video game music

What is the policy for discussing video-game music on this article? I see a couple of examples where one song in the comparison is from a video game (Hip Tanaka - Chill). What about alleged cryptomnesia between two video-game songs? Do we need to create a separate article for that? Eighty5cacao 10:13, 19 August 2010 (MST)

Yeah, I heard a StarTropics bass line on level 1 of Zoop for Super NES too. I'm not sure exactly in which direction I want to take the page, but I don't want video game examples to overwhelm examples from the U.S. pop charts; I want it to be accessible to non-gamers. Perhaps a categorization scheme might become apparent later. --Tepples 16:44, 19 August 2010 (MST)
I may start an informal list in my userspace, but initially it will focus on examples that can be supported by online videos, and it will be a long time before it is comprehensive enough to be mainspaced. Eighty5cacao 22:45, 20 August 2010 (MST)

When to include the month

To answer a question brought up in an edit summary: Ordinarily, only the year of a song's first publication is needed. It is helpful to add the month if the songs were first published in the same year or successive years (e.g. 2001 vs. 2002) to establish how likely it is that the writer of one song had heard the other. --Tepples 12:36, 24 August 2010 (MST)

Okay, thank you. I figured that out a few minutes after my edit... Eighty5cacao 15:41, 24 August 2010 (MST)

On second thought

Journey - Don't Stop Believin' vs. Hosanna! Music - Blessed Be the Lord (1992) when I went back to it, they weren't as similar as I thought, but I might be able to stretch it if I get time to make a juxtaposition. --Tepples 10:35, 5 September 2010 (MST)

This one's a stretch too: He's So Fine vs. My Sweet Lord vs. Grand Funk Railroad - Bad Time vs. The Four Seasons - Let's Hang On! --Tepples 17:21, 19 September 2010 (MST)

YT links that are not demos

Discussion moved to User talk:Eighty5cacao/Songs that sound alike (video games)#YT links that are not demos --Eighty5cacao 17:32, 3 October 2010 (MST)

That one's bogus

"Layla" and "Two Tickets to Paradise"? That one's bogus. -- Jim Yerrick 13:38, 25 December 2010 (MST)

Can you explain the problem in more detail so that Tepples can reevaluate this / provide any necessary supporting references? Eighty5cacao 16:47, 25 December 2010 (MST)
Administrivia: Why did the original post of this section get attributed to Sukey? --Eighty5cacao (talk) 03:49, 5 September 2013 (UTC)
A bug in older versions of User Merge would merge userid 0 (anonymous edits) to another user if the "merge from" user were misspelled (or copied and pasted with a parenthesis). So all anonymous edits before a certain date appear to have been merged. --Tepples (talk) 13:07, 5 September 2013 (UTC)

Creativity allowable in mashups

This could also have been posted to [[Template talk:Non-free stsa]] but I wasn't sure
I've noticed that your mashups tend to separate the two songs by stereo channels, with the minimum of editing necessary. What about mashups that require a greater degree of creative editing to adequately demonstrate the similarity? Is it acceptable for these to be uploaded to the wiki and given the {{non-free stsa}} template, provided that an adequate rationale is written? Or should they be preferentially uploaded elsewhere? (For examples of greater creativity, see certain examples which are currently linked on the STSA pages.) Does the wording of {{non-free stsa}} need to be adjusted? Eighty5cacao 17:59, 23 March 2011 (MST) (last edit 08:47, 24 March 2011 (MST))

There's a bit of creativity in some of my existing mash-ups. The one with "Dam Dariram" (not linked due to likely authorized reuse) and the one with "You Are What You Is" both adjust loop counts of one of the tracks. The latter also has a few moments where I fade one track out and the other to center to make a drum fill or other effect not clash. The one with "Friend Like Me" on the video game page is a cover of the older song using the newer song's sample bank. As long as it contains elements of both songs arranged in a way that illustrates the similarity, and as long as the rationale is plausible, it should be fine. --Tepples 11:00, 24 March 2011 (MST)

Just Dance TODO

Citations needed: I recall hearing that Just Dance 2 was at one point planned to include "Just Dance" (the Lady Gaga song), but this was changed at some point in development and I don't remember the exact reason. Eighty5cacao 21:53, 18 August 2011 (MST)

Relevance of lyrics

To what extent are lyrics and music-video contents relevant to this article? See for example the Linkin Park/Evanescence cases, as well as various notes and footnotes already on the article. Eighty5cacao 08:06, 25 August 2011 (MST)

They're not directly relevant to this article in particular, but I needed somewhere to stash things that had been brewing in my head. --Tepples 10:22, 25 August 2011 (MST)
So a new page should be created to handle similarities that are based more on lyrics or music videos than on melody? Eighty5cacao 14:09, 25 August 2011 (MST)

Define dubious

Regarding this edit summary, could you list the specific entries you consider dubious (and what specifically is wrong with each) so that I can drag any of mine back to the dump? Eighty5cacao 11:09, 16 October 2011 (MST)

I'll have to go through them again, but there were a few cases here and on (vg) where I couldn't even find what parts of the songs you were talking about. --Tepples 11:47, 16 October 2011 (MST)
In that case, please allow a little over 48 hours from now for me to provide more detailed explanations and do some cleanup myself. During this time, please don't remove any entries without talking to me first. (I can't guarantee a shorter time to resolve such issues because I will be somewhat busy with schoolwork.)
Some of my entries here (not on -vg) were based purely on Wikipedia information, and I did not make a sufficient attempt to evaluate the similarity for myself because I did not legally own a recording of one or more songs and/or could not find the song(s) on YT. If this is a reason for any particular complaint, please specify.Eighty5cacao 12:12, 16 October 2011 (MST) (last edit 12:31, 16 October 2011 (MST))
I don't own a copy of a lot of these myself either; I just have relatives who listen to oldies radio. I wasn't planning on removing anything so quickly, just making demos of the ones I do own (or can buy easily on Amazon). --Tepples 14:34, 16 October 2011 (MST)

What is AL0

No article with that exact title seems to exist on the English Wikipedia. Does the abbreviation refer to one of "Weird Al" Yankovic's albums, or something else entirely? Eighty5cacao 15:16, 19 October 2011 (MST)

Nothing to do with Weird Al, just the titles of some mixtapes I made when I was in college. AL0: Bigg Mixx was released partially on Bemanistyle (or DDREI? I forget which, it was so long ago); the others (AL1: Power Strangers and AL2: unsAOLved) have never been released. --Tepples 16:03, 19 October 2011 (MST)
I guess the lack of notability would explain why I had trouble searching for it. Thanks. Eighty5cacao 16:11, 19 October 2011 (MST)

Regarding this edit, why didn't you just do a find-and-replace in your browser? Did you have Notepad++ configured as an external editor? If so, why? (I'm just curious; I'm not trying to play tech support.) Eighty5cacao 19:55, 30 October 2011 (MST)

I cnp'd the article into N++ because I only know how to do find, not replace, within the text editor of Firefox. --Tepples 06:13, 31 October 2011 (MST)
Oh, whoops, that was stupid. I forgot that most browsers don't offer find and replace as built-in functionality. So I take it the answer is "no" as to my question about the external editor setting? Eighty5cacao 10:45, 31 October 2011 (MST)

MoS issue: Spaces after table delimiters

What is your justification for putting spaces after all the | delimiters? I would personally be inclined to do exactly the opposite (i.e., remove all the spaces). Sorry if there is some Wikipedia MoS page I failed to read. Eighty5cacao 13:10, 14 May 2012 (MST)

It was an excuse for a null edit to clarify my previous mistake (for which thank you for boldly correcting) for the record. I haven't seen any such MoS page either on whether or not to include a leading space in table cells. Wikipedia's help and project pages do it both ways: wikipedia:Help:Wikitable with spaces and wikipedia:Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Tables without. The guiding principle is consistency, as alluded to in "Example with no space" on trope:TropeNameInJokes. --Tepples 13:18, 14 May 2012 (MST)

Yummy Yummy Yummy and Just What I Needed

Listen to the first few seconds of BOTH "Yummy Yummy Yummy" by Ohio Express and "Just What I Needed" by the Cars! --unsigned (

How about I do that --unsigned (

I have no idea what you mean by this. How about who does what? --Tepples 05:38, 4 September 2012 (MST)

Sweet and Tasty Rock and Roll

"Cherry Pie" by Warrant sounds like "Pour some sugar on me" by Def Leppard and Joan Jett's "I love rock and roll". This is similarity is mentioned on Cherry Pie's wikipedia page. --unsigned (

Powerhouse B

Wikipedia:Powerhouse (instrumental) states that the two parts of "Powerhouse" are traditionally called "Powerhouse A" (the "chase" music) and "Powerhouse B" (the "assembly line" music). But I guess I don't really need the "B" with the Notes column. --Tepples 18:05, 25 November 2012 (MST)

Yeah, I apologize for not reading the Wikipedia article. I probably wouldn't have been so bold had the Notes field not started with the word "Bass." Anyway, I decided to move the "B" inside the link. --Eighty5cacao 20:38, 25 November 2012 (MST)

A Few More

James - Laid & Ritchie Valens - La Bamba
Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out & Led Zeppelin - Trampled Underfoot

Smash Mouth- Then the Morning comes VS The Animals- It's My Life (unsigned post by

Here are some songs

Sly and the Family Stone's Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) sounds like Wild Cherry's Play That Funky Music.
