Nitpicking on typography
Is there any good reason why "μClinux" is not properly written with the Greek letter mu? Eighty5cacao 20:12, 30 September 2011 (MST)
- The phrase "properly written" is ambiguous. It could mean either "Why is it 'incorrect' on uclinux.org?" or "Why is it incorrect on Pin Eight?".
- As for the question "Why do some software projects use the Latin small letter u to represent the Greek small letter mu?": I guess it's because most programming languages are written with Latin letters, not Greek letters. Keyboard layouts for Latin letters tend not to have keys for Greek letters, and people using Latin keyboard layouts enter occasional Greek letters only by copying and pasting them, which becomes tedious. And even if there were a key, Greek letters aren't in the ISO 8859 code pages for Latin. Several discussion forums don't allow the use of any Unicode code point outside a small subset for various reasons. Gametrailers and Slashdot are among them, and historically, mail and newsgroups have had to pass through 7-bit systems. --Tepples 07:59, 1 October 2011 (MST)
- "On Pin Eight" is obviously what I meant. I didn't even look at uclinux.org, and for that I could say yet again "I didn't do my homework." None of the above is new information to me; I just felt we should at least acknowledge the existence of the spelling with mu.
- I'm really sorry for not being clearer in the first place - I guess I was in a hurry to fill this talk page with some useful content (it was last blanked by me after a spammer posted on it, and by today's rules it would probably have been deleted). I take it you would object if I changed the article to use the spelling μClinux? Eighty5cacao 09:57, 1 October 2011 (MST)
- I'm aware of wikipedia:Talk:ΜClinux#Article name. I don't exactly know what to say at the moment. --Tepples 05:56, 2 October 2011 (MST)
- Ok. Again, sorry for not doing my homework. Eighty5cacao 10:13, 2 October 2011 (MST)
