Put and take

There are plenty of variations on put and take or teetotum games for two to six players. These games are played with a random number generator, such as a die, spinner, or top, and several counter tokens, which could be coins, chips, or plastic cherries.

Hi Ho! Cherry-O

Start
40 cherries on tree, 0 cherries in each bucket
Goal
10 cherries in bucket
Player with 0 cherries must pass
No

The spinner has 7 sides.

+1
Move one cherry from tree to bucket.
+2
Move two cherries from tree to bucket.
+3
And so on.
+4
And so forth.
-2 (two sides, one marked with a bird and one with a dog)
Move two cherries from bucket to tree.
Bankrupt ("spill")
Move all cherries from bucket to tree.

Since 2007, Hasbro has been including Orchard-like cooperative rules in the package. Each player's bucket is still limited to ten cherries (with color-coded cherries to help enforce this), but there is an additional set of bird counters. One of the -2 sides of the spinner is replaced with "add one bird counter". Dog loses only 1, and spill loses only 2. If the bird counter reaches 9 before all players reach 10, all players lose.

Orchard

Similar in concept to HHCO but entirely cooperative so it can be played solitaire if needed. There are four different fruits, traditionally red (cherry), yellow (pear), green (apple), and blue (plum).

Start
10 cherries on each of 4 trees, 0 cherries in bucket
Goal
Empty all trees before reaching 9 bird counters.

Roll a 6-sided die.

+1A
If tree A is not empty, add a cherry from tree A to your bucket.
+1B
If tree B is not empty, add a cherry from tree B to your bucket.
+1C
If tree C is not empty, add a cherry from tree C to your bucket.
+1D
If tree D is not empty, add a cherry from tree D to your bucket.
+2
Add any two fruits to your bucket.
Bird
Add one bird counter.

Dreidel

Start
10 cherries in each bucket
Goal
Begin a turn as the last player with cherries
Player with 0 cherries must pass
Yes, unless loan rule variant is in effect

Before each player's turn, if the tree has 0 cherries, all players -1 one cherry to the tree. Then roll a 4-sided top.

0 ("nun as in nisht, nothing")
Nothing happens.
n ("gimel as in gants, all")
Move all cherries from tree to bucket.
n/2 ("he as in halb, half")
Move half of the cherries from tree to bucket, rounding up.
-3 ("shin as in shtel arayn, put in")
Move three cherries from bucket to tree.

Russian roulette

"All roulette should be Russian so we improve the species faster."

—Luke McKinney, "6 Groundbreaking Ways Video Games Are Screwing Players"

Yet Cracked seems to think a Russian roulette toy is disturbing.[1]

Start
1 cherry in each bucket
Goal
Begin a turn as the last player with cherries
Player with 0 cherries must pass
Yes

The spinner has six sides.

0 (five sides, marked "empty")
Nothing happens.
-1 ("bullet")
Give one cherry to the tree.

LCR

Start
10 cherries per bucket
Goal
Begin a turn as the last player with cherries
Player with 0 cherries must pass
Yes

Each player makes three moves per turn (or one move for each cherry with which he started the turn, whichever is less) and rolls a 6-sided die.

1L ("L as in left")
Move one cherry to next player's bucket.
-1 ("C as in center")
Move one cherry to tree.
1R ("R as in right")
Move one cherry to previous player's bucket.
0 (three sides)
Nothing happens.

Moving cherries does not skip players with 0 cherries. This can allow a player with 0 cherries to reenter the game.

Not to be confused with the other kind of LCR, which can be used to play a deadly version of Russian roulette.
